Dr. Katarina Braune

As a medical doctor of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and BIH Digital Clinician Scientist, Dr. Katarina Braune’s mission is to change the future of diabetes care through patient-led innovation. Living with diabetes since childhood age, she is empowering others as a global diabetes advocate and public speaker. She is clinical lead of the EU Horizon 2020-funded project “OPEN”, investigating the phenomenon of “Do-it-Yourself” artificial pancreas systems, translating knowledge from the patient community to academia and industry and vice versa, towards the goal of making artificial pancreas technology available to everyone.

Kismet studied health economics at universities in Bremen and Berlin and is currently PhD candidate at Charité Berlin.

 

Jana Fehr
Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering

Jana Fehr is a PhD candidate at the Digital Health and Machine Learning group at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute in Potsdam. Her research interest is on evaluating machine-learning tools pre- and post deployment in medical practice. During her M. Sc. studies in Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Heidelberg she developed an interest in infectious diseases and which led to starting a collaboration with the Africa Health Research Institute in South Africa and investigate the applicability of the machine-learning tool CAD4TB for detecting tuberculosis in a large-scale community-based screening program. Next to this project, Jana Fehr is engaged in the multidisciplinary ITU/WHO Focus Group Artificial Intelligence for Health (FGAI4H) that works on establishing validation guidelines to enhance the translation of machine learning tools into medical practice. Her next goals are to apply methods from causal inference to understand hidden confounding in machine learning algorithms that might cause transportability problems between different application settings.

Prof. Dr. Juliane Fluck

Juliane Fluck studied biology and completed her PhD in the field of cell biology and immunology. In 2000, she started working in the emerging field of bioinformatics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI. In 2006, she took charge of the Text Mining group and in April 2017, she was appointed as deputy head of the Fraunhofer SCAI Bioinformatics department. Since October 2018, she has a professorship at the University of Bonn and works at the ZB MED Information Centre for Life Sciences and heads a research group for information and knowledge management. Key topics of her research include text and data mining, semantic data integration and the electronic availability and interoperability of data and knowledge. She coordinates the national infrastructure of personalised health data, NFDI4Health, one of the nine newly setup national research data infrastructures funded by the DFG.

Dr. Max Hackelöer

Max Hackelöer, born in 1990, studied human medicine in Budapest and Hamburg. Since 2018 he is training to become a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics at the Charité. Together with his team he has been researching new forms of care for high-risk pregnant women as part of the Digital Health Accelerator Program (DHA) since September 2019.

Dr. Jana Hapfelmeier drives the implementation and development of machine learning use cases at Vilua Healthcare GmbH Jana and her team are developing models to identify people with health risk and identify the best individual interventions for people. Moreover, they work on publicly funded research projects to build a health recommendation engine.

Thomas Jarzombek
Commissioner for the Digital Industry and Start-ups BMWi

Thomas Jarzombek started an IT service company in 1996 while being a student of Economics, until 2017 he was a partner of the firm. He has been politically active for more than 25 years, for example as a member of the City Council of Düsseldorf as well as member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2009, 2013 and 2017 he was elected to the German Bundestag. Thomas Jarzombek is the Chairman of the CDU Düsseldorf and from 2014 until 2018 he was the Spokesperson of the CDU/CSU-parliamentary group in the Digital Agenda Committee of the Bundestag. He also is member of the Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure since 2009. Since April 2018 Thomas Jarzombek is the new Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy at the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. In addition to this function, Thomas Jarzombek was appointed as the Commissioner for the Digital Industry and Start-ups in August 2019. His work will focus on dialogue with the stakeholders in the digital sector and with start-ups. He aims to make the digital market even more accessible for start-ups and to improve the policy environment for an international market.

Dr. Martin Atta Mensah

After studying human medicine at the Charité – Berlin and the KU Leuven (Belgium) from 2008 to 2015. Martin Mensah has been working as a physician and researcher at the Charité. He is currently completing his specialist training as a human geneticist at the Institute for Medical Genetics and Human Genetics of the Charité. Martin is a fellow of the Digital Clinician Scientist Program of the Berlin Institute of Health with his main research area being the computer-aided interpretation of image data from patients with genetic syndromes.

Prof. Dr. Alexander Meyer

Alexander Meyer is Chief Medical Information Officer at the DHZB, group leader at DHZB‘s Medical Data Science Group and senior resident in cardiothoracic surgery at the Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the German Heart Center Berlin. He will start a professorship of “Clinical Data Science and Artificial Intelligence” at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in January 2021. Before his career as a physician scientist, Dr Meyer worked as a computer scientist and software developer. End 2016 he was selected into the Clinician Scientist Program at the Berlin Institute for Health (of the Charité), from 2018 to 2020 he was participant of the Digital Health Accelerator program, during which he launched the DHZB spin off x-cardiac a digital health company, that provides real time digital biomarkers for postoperative risk stratification.

Dr Meyer‘ s research field comprises medical data science big data analytics applied deep learning machine learning medical informatics for heart surgery transcatheter structural heart therapeutics.

Dr. Marcel Naik

Marcel G. Naik (*1982) got introduced to relational databases and statistics during medical thesis. Funded by BIH’s digital clinician scientist programme for developing a prediction model on graft failure his other research interests are: individual therapy, organ allocation, the problems of transplantation like (viral) infections and cancer.

Dr.-Ing. Matthieu-P. Schapranow

Dr.-Ing. Matthieu-P. Schapranow is Leader of the Working Group “In-Memory Computing for Digital Health” and Scientific Manager Digital Health Innovations at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI). He is a valued member of many international committees and bodies, such as the Platform Learning Systems and the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health. He received remarkable awards, such as the top Elite Researchers in Life Sciences or the Innovation Award of the German Capital Region. Together with Prof. Dr. Plattner, he published the textbook “High-Performance In-Memory Genome Data Analysis”.

Then, I returned into academic and received my Ph.D. from the Free University Berlin in 2018. My research focus is on the prediction of regulatory genetic variations in human diseases.

Prof. Dr. Falk Schwendicke

Manouchehr Shamsrizi, M.P.P., is Co-Founder and was CEO of RetroBrain R&D GmbH in Hamburg. Shamsrizi is also a co-founder of “gamelab.berlin” in the “Bild Wissen Gestaltung” cluster of excellence at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Yunus Centre for Social Business and Values at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Manouchehr Shamsrizi Ariane de Rothschild is also a Fellow of Innovative Entrepreneurship at the University of Cambridge and a Global Justice Fellow at Yale University. He is a member of the Health Economics Committee of the DIHK and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Malteser Campus St. Maximilian Kolbe. Shamsrizi has been awarded the title of Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Ashoka-IT4Change Fellow and Leader of Tomorrow of the University of St. Gallen. He is also a member of CAPITAL’s “Young Elite – 40 under 40”.

Dr. Nico Steckhan

Dr. Nico Steckhan is working as a PostDoc at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) – Connected Healthcare chair of Prof. Arnrich. Because of his association with clinical research departments (Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Prof. A. Michalsen) he is able to integrate data science and clinical research. He has long experience in the design, conduction and data analysis of randomized controlled trials. His main focus is the integration of digital technologies for clinical research and operate on the feasibility of IT solutions to allow real-time monitoring and data analysis on distributed servers. He holds a master’s degree in bioinformatics about the integration of multidimensional data and latent feature modeling. At Charité he develops integrative concepts for the further development of the treatment of the most important chronic and lifestyle associated diseases. Digital transformation and systems medicine will establish a more lifestyle concerned medical system that seems to be necessary on a public health level.

PD Dr. Christian Stephan – an expert in bioinformatics/biostatistics, medicine and biology – has been providing the KAIROS GmbH with significant impetus for the expansion of the CentraXX system, focusing on personalized medicine since 2012 as managing partner. Prior to that, he managed the Bioinformatics/ Biostatistics working group of the Medical Proteome Center at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB). As a graduate private lecturer, he lectures at the Medical Faculty of the RUB.

Paweł Świeboda
Founding CEO of EBRAINS Director of the Human Brain Project

Paweł Świeboda has been appointed as the Human Brain Project’s new Director General. An accomplished expert on EU research issues, Mr Świeboda joins the HBP from the European Commission. He is taking over the role of Director General from Prof. Andreas Mortensen of the Swiss Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The appointment follows Mr Świeboda becoming founding CEO of EBRAINS in May 2020.

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is the largest brain science project in Europe and stands among the biggest research projects ever funded by the European Union. As a lasting contribution to the global science community it has developed EBRAINS, a novel European research infrastructure that enables seamless collaboration between scientists and technology experts to advance the fields of neuroscience, computing and brain-related medicine.

Paweł Świeboda starts his position at the beginning of the HBP’s final phase as a ten-year EU Flagship project. In this double-role as HBP Director General and EBRAINS CEO, he will chair the Directorate of the HBP, guiding it through the transition into an enduring, sustainable European research infrastructure EBRAINS, and he will also head the EBRAINS AISBL in Brussels, which was established in 2019 as an international non-profit association under Belgian law. Over the coming months, the EBRAINS AISBL will take over the role of the coordinator of the HBP from the EPFL.

Previously, Paweł Świeboda served as Deputy Head and Head of Research at the European Political Strategy Centre (formerly EPSC, now IDEA) since 2015. He was Director of the EU Department at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2001 to 2006, and EU Advisor to the President of Poland from 1996 to 2000.

Upon his appointment by the HBP’s Stakeholder Board, Świeboda commented: “I am honoured and delighted to join some of the world’s leading scientists working on the puzzle of the brain. I will do my utmost to ensure that the Human Brain Project meets its promise in terms of breakthrough scientific and technological achievements”.

Betty van Aken

Betty van Aken works as a research assistant and PhD student at the DATEXIS research group of the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. Since 2018, her research focuses on deep learning approaches for natural language processing. In this regard, her previous work involved developing and explaining deep neural networks for idiosyncratic domains. She currently investigates the automatic analysis of clinical notes with the goal of supporting doctors in the process of differential diagnosis.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Kai Zacharowski

Prof. Dr. Dr. Kai Zacharowski, ML FRCA is Director of the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy at the University Hospital Frankfurt.

As anesthesiologist, intensive care physician and clinical pharmacologist, his research focuses on risks in anesthesia and intensive care medicine, the complex interaction of the immune and coagulation systems, blood poisoning (sepsis) and patient blood management.

Since 2020, he is President of the European Society of Anaesthesiology & Intensive Care (ESAIC), representing the community of health care professionals working together in the fields of anaesthesiology, intensive care, perioperative, emergency and pain medicine to raise the standards of the profession and patient safety.

In addition to several honorary roles, he is Chairman of the Board of the Christoph Lohfert Foundation and Chairman of the Board of the Health, Patient Safety and PBM Foundation.
